Self-defense items were reportedly flying of the shelves of Berlin-based store 'Soldier of Fortune', which specialises in weaponry, Wednesday, as sales of defence equipment continue to skyrocket in Germany. The growth in arms sales is purportedly related to fears of increasing refugee numbers, with many Germans conflating the recent influx of migrants with an increase in crime. Owner of the shop, Pavel Sverdlov, said that business is currently booming. After receiving a fresh delivery just the day before, Sverdlov pointed at the display case saying, "Normally it's completely full of 20, 30, kinds of gas and Zubehor pistols but now we're practically sold out." Selling an array of weapons including guns, knives and even swords, Sverdlov said that the type of clientele visiting his shop has changed, and that the demand for less lethal alternatives such as electro shockers and pepper spray has increased. "Normally our customers are young men, but from August, September, older people are coming to us more women, or some men with their wives, their daughters," he said. Donald Trump: Arms Dealer-In-Chief. Ana Kasparian, Amberia Allen, and Maytha Alhassen, the hosts of The Young Turks, tell you why he thinks weapons sales will get him reelected. Tell us what you think in the comment section below. Join TYT: https://goo.gl/v8E64M “President Donald Trump had one question for Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc: Why wasn’t his country buying more American military equipment? For Trump, a self-styled traveling salesman, crisscrossing the region to reverse decades of trade deficits, Vietnam’s decision to buy arms from Russia was incomprehensible, almost insulting. Never mind that U.S. law prevented such sales until last year. Trump reminded Phuc that he’s been president for 10 months, according to two people who requested anonymity to discuss a private meeting. What was he waiting for? He needed quick wins, he told his team in the room, because he’d be running for re-election before anyone realized. And weapons sales, in Trump’s view, are good for his approval ratings. The meeting was a microcosm of the president’s 11-day tour through Asia, a marathon trip where Trump was repeatedly lavished with flattering gestures by foreign leaders, but frustrated in his desire to score quick wins on trade or North Korea that would buoy him politically back home. Asian nations were looking for signs Trump hadn’t abandoned the region when he pulled out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal in January. The White House seemed to suggest the sheer length of the trip was proof enough, with both Trump and his aides referencing it again and again.” Read more here: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-11-14/trump-in-asia-kept-one-eye-on-re-election-with-push-for-deals Hosts: Ana Kasparian, Amberia Allen, Maytha Alhassen Cast: Ana Kasparian, Amberia Allen, Maytha Alhassen *** The Largest Online News Show in the World. INTRODUCTION: President Donald Trump has clinched a $350 billion arms deal with Saudi Arabia over the weekend during his visit in Riyadh; $110 billion of that figure will take affect immediately. The U.S. State Department said in a written statement that the arms package “supports the long-term security of Saudi Arabia and the Gulf region in the face of malign Iranian influence and Iranian related threats.” Saudi Arabia one of the primary destination for U.S. arms sales, according to the Council on Foreign Relations, with the Kingdom purchasing nearly 10 % of U.S. exports from 2011 to 2015. The arms package represents an enhancement of Saudi Arabia's military capabilities as tensions flare in the region, with the U.S. viewing the Saudis as a cornerstone in efforts to check the global ambitions of Iran. Lockheed Martin, Boeing and Raytheon are seen as the biggest beneficiaries as per experts and their stock price have risen sharply after the deal. In this video, Defense Updates provides viewers with the list of 5 most important weapons being sold by US to Saudi Arabia as part of this deal. Lets get started. PAVEWAY GUIDANCE SYSTEMS The U.S. has sold precision-guided bombs and technology to the Saudis as far back as 2008, but the kingdom has reportedly been badly in need of a resupply since its campaign in Yemen kicked off two years ago. “Paveway” guidance systems “convert thousands of dumb bombs into smart bombs.” Paveway kits attach to a variety of warheads, and consist of a semi-active laser (SAL) seeker, a computer control group (CCG) containing guidance and control electronics, thermal battery, and pneumatic control augmentation system (CAS). M1A2 MIAN BATTLE TANK Saudi Arabia will get 133 new Saudi-specification M1A2S main battle tanks. 20 additional tanks will replace those from the Saudis fleet that were lost in combat, possibly against Yemen. The M1A2 is an improvement on the M1A1. Significant upgrades include the re-designed Commander’s Weapon Station (CWS). The M1A2 is arguably one of the most sophisticated tanks the world, and it’s much more advanced than Iran’s Karrar. The tank sale also comes with M88A1/A2 Heavy Equipment Recovery Combat Utility Lift Evacuation System (HERCULES). HERCULES can be used to tow damaged tanks from the battlefield for repairs. Other support equipment and training will also be part of the package. The M1A2 will give Saudi Arabia a definitive edge in case of ground battle. CH-47F CHINOOK Riyadh will get around 48 CH-47F Chinook cargo helicopters. The iconic twin rotor heavy-lift helicopter is a battle proven machine that has flown countless missions into warzones from Vietnam to Afghanistan and Iraq. While the original Chinook first flew in 1962, it has undergone several upgrades, and is now one of the most modern heavy lift choppers in the world. CH-47F Chinook is able to carry 33 troops plus 3 crew, with a maximum gross weight of 50,000 pounds, and maximum cruise speed of 160 knots. The deals also include 112 Lycoming T55-GA-714A engines that the Chinooks use, 58 AN AAR-57 Common Missile Warning Systems, and 48 M240H 7.62mm machine guns with spare parts and other hardware. MULTI-MISSION SURFACE COMBATANTS The Saudis will be getting some “Multi-Mission Surface Combatants,” or MMSC ships, which are based on the Freedom-class, primarily built by Lockheed Martin. The Multi-Mission Surface Combatant (MMSC) is a lethal and highly maneuverable multi-mission surface vessel capable of littoral and open ocean operation. I It has a nautical range of 5,000 miles and can go as far as 30 knots per hour. The MMSC utilizes the COMBATSS-21 Combat Management System, built from the Aegis Combat System Software library. The MMSC is armed with multiple weapons system which include 57mm Mk110 deck gun, SeaRAM, port and starboard 20 mm remote guns and a forward centerline 8 cell MK 41 Vertical Launch System equipped with RIM-162 Evolved Sea Sparrow Missiles. The MMSC is also equipped with the AN/SLQ-25 Torpedo Defense system TERMINAL HIGH ALTITUDE AREA DEFENSE Perhaps the most controversial missile defense system in the world, Terminal High Altitude Area Defense, or THAAD, will be sold to Saudi Arabia. THAAD, is an anti-ballistic missile system, which is designed to shoot down short, medium, and intermediate range ballistic missiles in their terminal phase. THAAD uses a hit-to-kill approach that is the missile carries no warhead, but relies on the kinetic energy of impact to destroy the incoming missile. It has a range of 200 km. U.S. recently deployed the THAAD to South Korea to protect it against North Korean missiles. This is seen as part of the effort to provide Saudi Arabia with a cover against the missiles of Iran, its main rival. Though there are plenty of critiques about the system, it is highly advanced and would be a powerful addition to Saudi Arabia’s ballistic missile defense.

The US is reportedly finalizing arms deals worth over 100 billion dollars with Saudi Arabia. Media quoted unnamed White House officials as saying that the deals cover sales of arms and ships as well as maintenance services. The sources said the deals are part of a 300-billion-dollar package to boost Saudi military capabilities in ten years. The officials said signing of the contracts is part of the agenda of the US president’s visit to Saudi Arabia next week. Riyadh has been importing tens of billions of dollars of arms from the US over the past years. Saudi Arabia has been leading a two-year onslaught on Yemen and is considered a major arms supplier to terrorists in Syria. The countries that export the most military weapons to the rest of the world. With US President Trump requesting a 10% boost in defense spending, and China having nearly doubled its military expenditures by the end of the decade, the world is rapidly becoming more militarized. The SIPRI study: http://bit.ly/2lcyd1b SIPRI's searchable database: http://bit.ly/2p16QKG Subscribe to TDC: https://www.youtube.com/TheDailyConversation/ Video by Bryce Plank and Robin West Music: "The Framework" by Jingle Punks — YouTube Audio Library Script: The world is becoming more militarized. President Donald Trump has requested a ten percent boost in defense spending, China will have nearly doubled its military expenditures by the end of the decade, and — with the impetuous Trump occupying the White House — conflict zones from the Korean Peninsula to Syria seem more likely to descend into open warfare than they did under the vigilant command of President Barack Obama. In these geopolitical games of chess, let’s review where the pieces on the board — the weapons systems — are coming from. These are the top ten countries that export the most arms according to the authority on this topic, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute. Before we begin, a few important points: the data does not include spending on support services for these increasingly high-tech systems, which is now the dominant aspect of military spending; companies — some state-owned — are the primary providers of these weapons; and we’re using the average of the five most recent years to give the rankings more stability. Israel’s arms industry is ranked tenth. Its exports surged above $1.2B for 2016, three times what it was just two years earlier. Part of this is increased sales to India, Israel’s biggest customer. Israel’s Aerospace Industries just finalized a deal worth $2B to provide air and missile defense systems. Ninth is Ukraine. Naval vessels were its primary military export until a contract with the Chinese dried up in 2015. Despite its ongoing conflict with Russia, Ukraine continues to sell it more and more arms. Aside from Thailand, the Indians and Vietnamese are also regular customers. Italy, the world’s eighth-leading arms exporter, does regular business with the United Arab Emirates. Leonardo S.p.A. — Italy’s leading defense contractor — recently cut a deal to sell the UAE eight of its brand new P180 Avanti IIHammerheadUnmanned Aerial Vehicles for $347 million. Seventh is Spain. It’s defense industry is concentrated heavily around two key markets: aviation and shipbuilding. State-owned Navantia is in the midst of delivering three Hobart-class destroyers to the Royal Australian Navy. The first of the 147.2 meter ships is currently conducting sea trials as it nears completion. The UK is the world’s sixth-ranked arms manufacturer. It’s largest defense contractor, BAE Systems, is the third-largest in the world. It’s supplied The Royal Saudi Air Force with 72 Eurofighter Typhoons as part of the Al Yamamah deal that guarantees the UK government 600,000 barrels of Saudi Arabian oil a day. The Germans have slipped from third to fifth in the last five years as Chancellor Merkel’s government has blocked the sale of certain weapons systems to countries with questionable human rights records like Turkey, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Brunei. It is instead selling more to allies like South Korea and Greece. Like the Germans, fourth-ranked France’s arms exports also declined during the last five years. President Francois Hollande came under heavy pressure from his NATO allies to cancel the sale of two Mistral-class amphibious assault ships to the Russians due to the crisis in Ukraine. Those ships instead were sold to Egypt. China’s third-ranked defense industry is surging, rising from the sixth position just five years ago. The Chinese understand that in geopolitics, controlling the sale of military hardware is often a government’s most valuable bargaining chip. What’s interesting is the Chinese don’t — or can’t — make sales to its global rival, the United States, or its regional rival, India. The only NATO nation China has ever exported arms to is Turkey, but even that stopped in 2013. Russia is second. Its main customer, India, now buys just half as many Russian made weapons systems as they were buying five years ago and, overall, Russia’s arms sales are down 30% from their peak. After Putin’s actions in eastern Ukraine, the US, NATO, and their allies used a combination of tools, including sanctions, to punish Russia.

A number of UK lawmakers have called on London to stop the sale of arms to Saudi Arabia until an inquiry into Riyadh’s human rights violations in Yemen is complete. The Committees on Arms Export Control or CAEC have raised serious concern about the UK’s commitment to international law regarding the sale of arms. The CAEC inquiry chairman Chris White says the government must now take urgent action in halting the sale of weapons to Saudi Arabia. White also called for an independent inquiry into Saudi Arabia’s use of cluster bombs in Yemen. Meanwhile, the foreign affairs select committee led by a conservative party lawmaker says arms sales should be decided by the high court. Britain has sold over five-billion-dollars worth of arms to Saudi Arabia since Riyadh’s bombardment of Yemen began. Democracynow.org - United Nations-brokered peace talks in Yemen’s nine-month-old civil war are faltering, amid disputes between rival factions over the release of prisoners. Meanwhile, local officials have reported intensifying clashes and renewed airstrikes despite an ongoing ceasefire. Over the weekend, U.S.-backed, Saudi-led airstrikes killed 19 Yemeni civilians in their homes and at a market. About half of the nearly 6,000 people killed in Yemen’s conflict are civilians, including more than 600 children. Rima Kamal of the International Committee for the Red Cross in Yemen warned of a deepening humanitarian crisis. The United States has bolstered the Saudi-led coalition’s airstrikes in Yemen through arms sales and direct military support. Saudi Arabia is one of the U.S. arms industry’s biggest customers. Last month, the State Department approved a billion-dollar deal to restock Saudi Arabia’s air force arsenal, which was depleted by its bombing campaign in Yemen. The sale included thousands of air-to-ground munitions and "general purpose" bombs. The United States and other countries have also reportedly sold internationally banned cluster munitions to Saudi Arabia that are now being used in Yemen. We speak with reporter Sharif Abdel Kouddous, who has just returned from Yemen. His recent piece for GlobalPost is "With US help, Saudi Arabia is obliterating Yemen."
